As you would (hopefully) be aware, I recently spent a couple of weeks in the Adelaide Hills at Wendy Schaeffers! It was a great experience, I was able to learn heaps about managing an event horse at a big competition with things such as cool down procedure, icing etc.
I competed in my first D Grade showjumping competition, and also came 4th in a 110cm class at Strathalbyn Showjumping Club in a class of 10+ horses (and that was with one rail!).
Wendy, Annika, Amarah and myself then went to Lakes & Craters Horse Trials in Victoria at a town called Camperdown. It was my third Pre Novice level event, and my first ever three day event. The event was held in the base of an old volcanic crater next to the lake and around the golf course, it was absolutely gorgeous.
On the Thursday we had ‘trot up’ where Spud was inspected by a vet and the ground jury. Both he and I had to be completely turned out for this!
Friday was dressage, Saturday cross country and then showjumping on Sunday. Because I’m an idiot I jumped the wrong last fence cross country and was eliminated, but I would have come 12th (out of 26), which would have been a great finish after being 23rd after dressage.
This is one of the jumps Spudly flew over
Main Event Photography took some lovely photos as well.
All in all it was a fantastic experience, even if very tiring, and I would absolutely encourage any member to look into working pupil with a top rider during the holidays and for work experience. You learn heaps and it’s really fun!
